FISH and CRITTER FEEDING AT OUR PLACE My wife’s mothering instincts are very strong. If she sees something that can eat, she feels that it is her duty to feed it! So there we were standing on the drive by the Guest House looking at the big fish meandering around the cove, and she said to me “we have to get some fish food.” We didn’t know the west side of the lake very well at all, but I was determined to find something with which she could feed these (obviously) starving fish! I headed for Laurie, found G2M grocery store, bought the biggest bag of dog food I could find, and headed back to the lake. Within 30 minutes she had carp, catfish, bream and some unidentified silver fish, at least 10 ducks, as well as a couple of chipmunks and a squirrel eating dog food. As you might imagine, this experience was proof in her mind that these animals needed her, and it gave birth to a number of additions to our family. Carl the Carp became our name for any of the big, bugle nosed, yellow carp that came up to feed. While we never did bestow names on the ducks, they have ever since been referred to as my wife’s ducks. We have never been to Our Place without being seen by at least a pair of these ducks. Generically, any chipmunks are referred to as Chip and Dale. If there are more than 2, I suppose we would call them Chips and Dales. Charlie is our catfish, regardless of what catfish may be in attendance at feeding time. If your family would like to see fish in action, be sure to bring a bag of dog food with you when you visit Our Place. Just stand on the seawall or the hot tub deck and toss the food out onto the surface of the water, and watch to see what happens. It’s fun to see how many different kinds of fish you can identify! Good luck! |
